Quick Overview — How to Join a World Missions Alliance Mission Trip
Most people think joining a mission trip begins with choosing a country. In reality, it begins much earlier. It begins when God starts stirring something in your heart that will not go away.
Key takeaways:
- Joining a mission trip begins with obedience, not logistics.
- The application is an introduction and a way for us to get to know you; it is not a financial commitment or a commitment to travel.
- At this time, applicants must currently be U.S. or Canadian citizens.
- A recommendation from a pastor, ministry leader, or qualified Christian leader helps provide spiritual accountability.
- Once approved, we can help you explore destinations, preparation, fundraising, travel details, and ministry opportunities.
How Do You Join a World Missions Alliance Mission Trip?

You join a World Missions Alliance mission trip by taking a first step of obedience: submit a simple application, provide a valid recommendation, and let us help you discern a mission trip that fits your calling, readiness, and season of life.
The application, whether for first-time missionaries or not, is not a financial commitment. It does not lock you into a destination, cost, or travel date. It simply begins a conversation with us.
For many people, the hardest part of missions is not raising support, boarding an airplane, or traveling to another country. It’s taking the first step. We have seen this repeatedly over the last 27 years.
A retired nurse wonders if she is too old. A business owner questions whether his skills matter in ministry. A teacher worries she does not know enough Scripture. A young believer feels God pulling on his heart, but is not sure what to do next. What all of them have in common is a willingness to answer the call.
We take the process seriously because missions are not simply travel; they are part of your discipleship journey. A mission trip involves a team, trusted local church partners, ministry opportunities, international travel, and real spiritual responsibility. People are trusting us to come with humility, preparation, and a servant’s heart. The application is not the finish line. It is the starting point.
So if God is stirring something in you, the next step is not to have every detail figured out. The next step is to begin. Submit the application, and let us walk with you from there.
Who Can Apply for a WMA Mission Trip?

At this time, we can accept mission trip applications from U.S. and Canadian citizens. You’ll see that requirement on our adult mission trip application page. It helps us keep the application, communication, and travel processes clear for how our ministry is currently operating.
Beyond that citizenship requirement, we are not looking for spiritual celebrities. We are looking for willing disciples. Some applicants have decades of ministry experience. Others are stepping onto a mission field for the first time. Some are pastors. Others are retirees who finally have the freedom to serve in ways they could not while raising a family or building a career.
You may be a seasoned intercessor wondering if your prayers still matter. They do. You may be a nurse, doctor, teacher, worship leader, youth worker, administrator, student, business owner, parent exploring family missions, or grandparent who wants to bring your gifts under God’s direction. Or you may simply feel a holy stirring and wonder if missions is the next obedient step.
One of the great surprises of missions is discovering that God often uses experiences you thought belonged entirely to your past.
The nurse discovers her profession can serve the ministry. The teacher discovers education can open doors for the Gospel. The business owner discovers leadership can translate across cultures. The grandmother discovers encouragement is a universal language. God wastes very little.
The application helps us get to know you, understand where you have been, and prayerfully consider how your gifts might strengthen the work our local ministry partners are already doing around the world.
What Are the Basic Requirements?
The basic requirements are straightforward:
- Complete the application.
- Agree with our Statement of Faith and ministry practices.
- Submit a recommendation from a pastor, ministry leader, or qualified Christian mentor.
Once those steps are completed and your application is approved, you are qualified to travel on any WMA mission trip.
The process is simple, but simple does not mean insignificant. The recommendation is especially important because missions are a community effort.
Throughout Scripture, ministry happens in community. The Apostle Paul traveled with teams. Churches commissioned workers. Believers confirmed callings. The recommendation process reflects that same principle.
We want to hear from someone who knows your character, your faith, and your willingness to serve. We want to know that you are plugged into a community of believers, not because we are looking for perfection, but because healthy ministry begins with accountability.
Who Can Write the Letter of Recommendation?

The best recommendation comes from someone who has observed your life over time. At WMA, we accept recommendations from pastors, associate pastors, life group leaders, Bible study leaders, leaders from Christian ministries, leaders from mission organizations, and recent church leaders who know you well.
We do ask that your recommendation not be written by you, a personal friend, a family member, a co-worker, or a boss who is not in a leadership position at your church. We also ask that the person be based in the United States or Canada.
Ask someone who knows your commitment to a local church, your character, and your willingness to learn. You do not need someone to exaggerate your strengths. You need someone who can honestly affirm that you are ready to take this step with humility.
One of the most encouraging things we read in recommendations is not simply that someone is gifted, but that they are humble. Gifted people can accomplish impressive things. Humble people can be used by God in remarkable ways.
What Happens After You Apply?

After you apply, we review your application and pastoral recommendation, then help you move toward a mission opportunity that fits once you are approved. Approval does not mean you have to travel right away. It simply means the door is open for you to join a team when the right opportunity comes.
This is where the process becomes less about paperwork and more about purpose. Some people already know where they want to go. Others simply know they want to serve. Both are perfectly fine places to begin.
Our mission trip page lists current and future destinations, including opportunities in places like Vietnam, Mexico, Egypt, Greece, Argentina, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Israel, and Ecuador.
Once you are approved, the conversation usually becomes more practical. Which country is stirring your heart? What dates can you realistically travel? What ministry setting fits your gifts? Are there medical, mobility, dietary, or scheduling concerns we should talk through together? Do you need help understanding payments, fundraising, flights, or preparation?
But beneath all those practical conversations lies a larger question: Where is God inviting you to join Him?
This is where guidance matters. You are not just choosing a place on a map. You are discerning where and how to serve faithfully, and we are here to help you take that next step with prayer, wisdom, and care.
How Should You Prepare Once You Are Approved?

Once you are approved to join a team, preparation begins with prayer and continues through practical planning. We encourage you to prepare spiritually, communicate steadily with the team, review health guidance, gather travel documents, plan for fundraising or trip payments, and ask questions early.
Then take the practical steps seriously. If you have health concerns, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that travel vaccines may depend on your destination, health, and vaccine history. They also recommend getting vaccinated 4 to 6 weeks before travel so vaccines have time to begin working.
As you pray, take the practical steps seriously. Faith and preparation belong together. Good preparation does not replace faith; it helps us walk in faithfulness. When your details are in order, you can focus more fully on prayer, team unity, our local church partners, and the ministry God has placed before you.
What Should You Know About Travel Details?

We want you to arrive prepared, peaceful, and ready to serve. Some travel details come later in the preparation process, and that’s completely normal.
Approximately six weeks before your trip, we send team members important information by mail and email. This usually includes what to bring, how to dress, who will pick you up at the airport, and lodging details. We know those pieces matter, especially when you are traveling somewhere new.
In most cases, team members book their own international flights. Our staff is happy to help when possible with finding flights and coordinating itineraries, so please don’t hesitate to reach out.
If you are a U.S. citizen traveling abroad, we also encourage you to look into the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. It’s a free service that sends email updates and alerts from U.S. embassies and consulates. This can be a wise part of responsible preparation.
If you feel uncertain, ask questions early. It’s better to ask than to quietly carry anxiety. A good mission team is built through communication, prayer, and shared preparation.
Summary
Joining a World Missions Alliance mission trip begins with a simple application and a valid recommendation, but it is really about something much deeper. It is about responding to God’s invitation.
The application does not obligate you financially or sign you up for a specific trip. It opens the door for approval, guidance, prayer, preparation, and a conversation about where you may serve well.
If God is stirring your heart toward missions, don’t worry about having every detail figured out. Take the next step. We will walk with you from there.
If you’re ready to explore the mission God is stirring in you, reach out to us today. Your next step can begin with saying “yes” to God’s call to the Great Commission.
